In 2002, Women Changing America Awards ceremony
was founded through the National Action Network (NAN)
organization. The National Action Network is a activist
oriented non-profit community organization that have
been in the Las Vegas community since 2001.
Women Changing America, has now changed
its name to American Women Changing America (AWCA),
Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things
. The purpose of the awards ceremony is to give
honor to women in varies communities local and
nationally who has a rare talent for touching people
with warmth and grace; have the courage to
pave new paths for the future generation of women;
passionate about social change and doing good work
towards others in their leadership roles and have earned
great admiration throughout their communities enhancing
support for those in need.
Annually, American Women Changing America, a
portion of its benefits will focus on empowering
women who live in Public Housing (PH). The AWCA
coordinating committee consist of five women that is
affiliated with the NAN organizations across the United
States. The AWCA coordinating committee have gone beyond
their call of duty, they have discovered that young
women who reside in Public Housing possesses external
and internal struggles which results in low self-esteem.
The AWCA committee will dedicate themselves in leading
many women in Public Housing from a pattern of low
self-esteem to pursue a life of purpose by providing
makeovers and education on social etiquette.
The founder of American Women Changing America is
Sheila Collins. She is a native Las Vegan, a Legal
Advocate & Paralegal graduate from the University of
Nevada Las Vegas
and her professional experience ranges from carrying out
her family’s extensive political roots and empowering
women. Sheila prides herself on being an ordinary
woman who is inspired by God to pursue various
venues in the field of advocacy and community
development. In 1999 Sheila was given a vision by God
that led her to leaving a abundant lifestyle for his
purpose to go into a low income desolate public housing
community which led to improving the conditions for over
294 or more families.
Sheila assisted the National Action Network
National Headquarters with the opening of their first
Las Vegas branch located on the North side of town.
Sheila Collins has been a active member on several
boards: the National Advancement Association of
Colored People(NAACP), Community Police
Advisory, Clark County Early Voting, the Nevada
Legislative Council sub-committee, the City of Las Vegas
Resident Advisory and she is a political grass root
mobilizer. She is the Western Region Director of the
Truth Hamer Initiative(a women voter education and
registration program) which honored Hollywood movie and
televison producer, Suzanne DePasse, at the 2005
luncheon. Sheila has had the pleasure in working on
projects with Founder of the National Action Network,
Reverend Al Sharpton; famed attorney Johnny Cochran;
entertainment and businessman, Russell Simmons; comedian
actress Mo’Nique; and Martin & Yolanda King, just to
name a few.
In other words, Sheila is a perfect vessel used to
empower, enhance and inspire those who want more out of
life. She is an ordinary woman doing
extraordinary things.
